Before I ever studied storytelling…
I was living it.
I just didn’t realize it yet.
I grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania…
The son of a steelworker
…and a business-savvy entrepreneur.
Two very different worlds.
But together?
They taught me a ton.
My dad was one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever known.
He worked at Bethlehem Steel…
…and trained for Ironman triathlons.
Not casually.
Relentlessly.
I remember waking up before sunrise…
Watching him run.
Coming home from school…
Seeing him on a stationary bike.
And my favorite part...
He built a wooden box…
So I could sit next to him while he trained.
He didn’t talk about discipline.
He modeled it.
My mom was different.
Not louder.
Not more intense.
But incredibly strategic.
She didn’t just run a business…
She built relationships.
She was a master networker.
Clients didn’t just get products.
They got solutions.
They got clarity.
They got connection.
And looking back now…
I realize I was learning two lessons that would shape everything I do today:
1. Hard work means nothing without a plan.
You can grind all day…
…but without direction, you’re just spinning your wheels.
2. Strategy means nothing without connection.
You can have the best plan in the world…
…but if it doesn’t resonate with people…
…it goes nowhere.
That’s storytelling.
Not the fluff.
Not the performance.
It’s the intersection of:
• Discipline
• Strategy
• Human connection
And I learned it…
Long before I ever gave my first talk.
Long before I ever stepped on a stage.
Sometimes the most important lessons…
Are the ones you don’t even realize you’re being taught.
